The developmental models available today stop at a better version of the person.
A more confident person.
A more successful person.
A more resilient person.
All valuable, rather invaluable!
But is that the end of the journey?
In Coachness™ we speak about the progression of the self:

• Fragmented self
• Observing self
• Regulated self
• Integrated self
• Instrumental self
A fragmented self struggles with life.
An observing self notices life.
A regulated self manages life.
An integrated self aligns with life.
An instrumental self serves life.
Notice that all five stages are about the self with a small “s”.
The self as personality.
The self as instrument.
The journey is not about becoming a perfect self, but ultimately it is about refining the instrument.
Many psychological approaches help us move from fragmentation toward integration. They help us become more aware, more congruent, and more effective.
That is important work… yet Indic Wisdom invites a deeper inquiry.
Once the self has become sufficiently refined, a different question begins to emerge.
It’s no longer: “How can I improve myself further?”
But: “Who is aware of this self?”
That question is not about personality, performance, and not even about self-improvement.
It is an inquiry into the nature of the one who knows all experiences, thoughts, emotions, identities, and roles.
The self can become fragmented.
The self can become integrated.
The self can become instrumental.
But can the Self?
You would now realise that the highest achievement of the self is not perfection, it recognising itself as an instrument.
And when that recognition becomes steady, another question quietly enters the conversation:
“Who am I?”
That is ‘Bhagavan Ramana’ entering the room. 🔥🙏🏼
